atmos were invited by Carlo Ratti Associati to submit designs for live-work courtyard spaces in their masterplan for the Ciudad Creativa Digital - a new tech city in Guadalajara The project was presented at the 2012 World Economic Forum in Davos and announced by the Mexican president on 31st January 2012.
Our proposal involved the delicate insertion of a new lightweight series of highly-serviced structures to cover, augment and enable the luxurious and ample courtyard spaces typical of the city. The new structure follows, softens and attenuates the grid in both plan and elevation, encouraging connectivity and convergence, enabling smooth flows throughout the building.
The side galleries hold aloft lightweight steel galleries that optimise use of the generous ceiling space and provide shaded intimate spaces for meetings and focus, their structure curling and embracing the existing masonry columns and vaults.
A solar-harvesting roof spans the space with a semi-transparent membrane, pockets openable at will. The central structure supports an elevated open deck beneath the main roof oculus, its limbs doubling as network fibre bundles that can be adaptively manoeuvred at will to provide power and services to spaces throughout the void.
